Just when you are feeling smug and cosily secure in the knowledge that you have state-of-the-art MTB gear, Shimano ups and launches a new and better version of its products - in this case the replacement for the 959 pedal - the XTR!

Their main improvement is the easier and smoother click-in and click-out facility. Either way is dead easy and positive all the time. The pedal structure has been opened up considerably to clear mud build-up, and the whole mechanism simplified. Tension adjustment is a breeze with "+" and "-" dials on the faces of the pedals.  All the mechanism can be clearly seen and understood because the pedal is now so open.

The "XTRs" have an open design for good mud clearance plus smooth entry and exit functionality.

If things like pedal aesthetics get you going, then take a close look at the Cro-Mo pedal spindle where it enters the cranks. It has been beautifully machined into a smooth tulip-shaped, no-nut flange.

These pedals are SM-SH51/SH56 cleat compatible.

Price?  A bargain at $299.
